Essential Oil Processing & Testing

  • Develop methods to isolate essential oils from the plant materials without the use of petrochemicals and building a database of the essential oil components using UVA and GC mass spectrometry. This information does not currently exist for most of the plants.
  • To understand the variability of the active chemical ingredients of the essential oils in the same plant species looking at companion plants, biomass added after extraction, different ecosystems, weather, and the genetic source of the plants.
  • Look at the metal content of the biomass and the essential oils extracted. This is to understand the selectivity of the plants/trees for certain metals.  This data will be useful regarding growing plants and trees to understand phytostabilization and the use of plant metal nano particles in industrial applications.
